LED vs Incandescent in Vintage Fixtures

Heat, dimming, colour temperature and when to keep filament bulbs.

LED vs Incandescent in Vintage Fixtures illustration

LED is right for most fixtures, but not every one.

Where LED wins

Enclosed fixtures, hard-to-reach chandeliers and commercial spaces benefit hugely: less heat on old wiring, fewer bulb changes and lower running costs.

Where filament still earns its place

Exposed-bulb fixtures where the filament is part of the design, and fixtures on older dimmers that were never intended for LED loads.

Getting it right

  • 2700K for warm domestic light; 3000K reads slightly crisper.
  • Check the dimmer is LED-rated before blaming the bulb.
  • Match the bulb shape to the shade so you do not create glare.
